Erin got a "new" digital camera for Christmas. (Actually, it was Stan's Canon A80, since his present from Brenda was a new Canon S2 IS that he's waiting to arrive.) So, most every picture taken this Christmas season was shot by Erin. She's developing a good eye. Since Anali and Brenda were sick over the holidays, we didn't end up going to Bryce Mountain with Cheryl, Roger, Adam and Olivia for several days as planned. Instead, Erin and Stan spent Friday, Dec. 29, with them in Staunton.

Late in the summer of 2007 we ordered a shed kit. Over the next month or so, with some terrific help from friends, Stan put it up. It took as long or longer to paint as it did construct. But at least the outside is completed and stuff is moved inside. There will likely always be ongoing projects to set it up inside, whether it's building more shelves, adding to the workbench, installing electrical service (and then a ceiling fan!), or something else.

In June 2007 our family spent 10 days in Colorado. The first five were with Brenda's family at a family reunion in a lovely lodge at Rocky Mountain Mennonite Camp. The second five were spent leisurely traveling a loop as a foursome being tourists at Royal Gorge, doing some hiking around Twin Lakes, horseback riding outside of Leadville, and relaxing at an extended family members' condo in Georgetown. All along the way we enjoyed the incredible scenery of the many stunning peaks and valleys we encountered.

Following the Amstutz family gathering in Ohio, we spent a few days in West Virginia at Babcock State Park and the New River Gorge National River area. While it rained plenty and we came home with wet, dirty gear, the rain didn't really interfere with our activities, including rafting the Upper New River.

Well, we finally took the plunge and there's no going back now! We had been talking about adding on to our house--or relocating--for a number of years. While there was lots of planning and negotiating leading up to the project, seven trees came down May 21, the girls and Stan took out the deck, and the contractor began demolition on June 29. When completed it will add about 600 square feet of new space inside, a 120 square foot screened porch and a new deck we'll add on ourselves. I'll add more pics every now and then as progress unfolds.

Grandma Schroeder celebrated her 100th birthday on Sunday, March 11, 2007, with a reception attended by many friends and family. I was fortunate enough to be there to help her celebrate. She is an incredible woman who to this day has a great sense of humor even when things don't always go the way she'd like. An oft' heard quote: "Well, sometimes that's just the way it is." Happy Birthday Grandma, and may God continue to bless you!

We spent Thanksgiving with the East Coast Norths in Harrisonburg. It was a great time with family. Plenty of food and fun. Many thanks to the Harrisonburg hosts.

The extended family of Ben Amstutz gathered in Kidron, Ohio, July 4-6 to reminisce and catch up with family happenings. Some camped, some stayed at the homes of Uncles & Aunts or at the local B&B. Meals and activities were in Curt & Gloria's backyard. No one went hungry! The grandkids seemed to have lots of fun, whether playing soccer, kickball, baseball, swimming, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kubb">Kubb</a> or messing with the fire.

The ABC show producers of <a href="http://extremehomelifecommunities.com/">Extreme Makeover: Home Edition</a> chose Linda and William Riggins for their first house in North Carolina. Linda works at Building Together Ministries, which is where Raleigh Mennonite shares space along with Hope Charter Elementary School. Not only did the Riggins get an incredible new house, the building that BTM, Hope and RMC meets in got a new roof, redecorated auditorium and new kitchen/cafeteria.

There's an extreme kitchen makeover happening at the Service Adventure house this summer (2007) thanks to the house owners. At this initial writing, it's looking great, with a lot of water damage/rotten wood having been repaired, new floor joists and subflooring and the initial framing completed.

For quite a few years a few of the men at RMC have stolen away to the beach for a weekend. This year there were nine of us who hung out at a very nice place at Ocean Isle. It was great to just relax and enjoy getting to know each other a little better.

Thirteen guys headed to the coast April 18-20, 2008, to do some camping, paddling, playing, eating and generally having a good time together. The trip succeeded on all counts.
We camped out at Cliffs of the Neuse Friday night, with two cars arriving in the morning and the other two in the afternoon. Sleep came easier for some than others since the group camping area also included a Cub Scout troop, Girl Scout troop and another church group.
Saturday morning we headed to Swansboro and were on the water headed to Dudley Island by about noon. It was no problem finding the island or the place our outfitter recommended we make camp, especially since Chris and Thomas arrived ahead of time by skiff. After setting up our site, playing in the water and on land, we had plenty to eat for supper. No lack of freeze dried meals and other goodies showed up.
A raccoon invasion of the garbage stowed in one of the kayak holds got a few of us up at 4 or so and the sound of distant thunder got most of us up at 5:30. By 6:30 the rains came in. Many of us hung out under a tarp in the meal area, eating breakfast, telling stories and wondering when the weather would break. By 8 we made the final call to head out and we were back on the water by 8:30. Taking full advantage of the high tide and wind at our backs, we overshot our turn in toward the outfitter and took the scenic route around Huggins Island. We still made it back to the outfitter before 11 and were eating lunch at Wendy's by noon. Lots of fond memories and ideas for what we'll do the next time....

Five guys from RMC and Phil, a friend of Paul's from Todd, NC who joined us, hit the trailhead at Grayson Highlands State Park in Southwest Virginia July 19, 2008, for an overnight backpacking trip to Mt. Rogers, the highest point in Virginia. The weather was ideal, the scenery stunning and the fellowship awesome. It was a popular trail, with the opportunity to meet many people along the way. On Sunday we had more time for solo reflection and wrapped up the hike with a mini worship service and communion. What a terrific way to spend a weekend.
